How to Choose Comfortable Heels — A Guide by Karachi Shoemakers

Heels have a reputation for looking beautiful and feeling painful — but that trade-off is mostly about choosing the wrong pair, not about heels themselves. After more than 40 years of making footwear by hand in Karachi, here is what we tell customers who want heels they can wear to a full event without counting the minutes until they can take them off.

1. Match the heel height to how long you'll wear them

Heel height is the single biggest comfort factor.

• Kitten heels (about 1–2 inches): the most comfortable option for long days, walking and standing. Elegant without straining the foot.
• Mid heels (about 2–3 inches): a good balance of height and comfort for weddings and dinners.
• High heels (3 inches and up): best kept for shorter, seated occasions.

If you're unsure, start lower. A kitten heel gives you the flattering line of a heel with far less pressure on the ball of the foot.

2. Choose a block heel over a thin heel for stability

3. Look for a supportive strap

• Shop for shoes later in the day, when feet are slightly larger.
• There should be a small gap at the back — your heel shouldn't slip out or be jammed in.
